The problem

In the last 20 years, I worked as a very successful teacher, in Yesodei Hatorah Girls School, I love children, and I loved to see them in a happy, confident state.

Sadly, that was often not the case. I observe my students in the lunchroom, some of them always tend to sit all alone, wishing they could join the lively conversation and laughter going on around them; some of them stand on the side or in the schoolyard as if society has spit them out. Their pain written all over their faces.

I observe so many children lacking self-esteem and confidents. This keeps them back from interacting with their peers. It makes them an easy target for bullies, which in turn knocks their self-image even lower.

I also observed children, who are impulsive, they are immature, and they do not think about the outcome of their actions. Of course, they also lack the ability to build relationships, which again is a hindrance in blending into society, so all of the above problems are starting again.

I thought a lot about my students, I spent a lot of time talking to other teachers and parents about this typical problem, but nobody could come up with any suitable solutions, I was very disheartened.

The Idea

After many meetings and discussions, in June. 2017 I sat in a meeting where I shared my summer experience, I told my colleagues that I had taken out my children on daily outings, I  invited their friends to join us, I formed a group of happy children. It was a lot easier to teach and reach out to the kids when they were enjoying themselves. Therefore, I suggested making a camp, which is only about social skills! To get the kids in this few weeks of the summer a place they belong, to give them a place to grow, to give them a place they will be loved, where everything there, will be about them, in a happy atmosphere it will be a lot easier to transform the kids into mature, happy, capable, confident adults. The teachers said that the idea by itself is a breakthrough; however, other teachers said that it is too expensive, or it is not doable, it did look a little bit too far-fetched.

you cant reach something fantastic!

only if ready to jump into the middle of the sea!

However, the idea got stuck in my mind, I decided to jump into it, I called a few other teachers who shared the same idea as myself. To help me plan it, we decided to make first a trial, to see how it will work out.

I placed a small ad in a local paper, saying we are making a day camp with emphasis on social skills, we took a small group of girls; I called a few volunteers, For it to work, they all had to have long years of experience dealing with children. So not simply volunteers, only very talented experienced teachers, even one head teacher, and one senco.

The second when the word got out on the street, what kind of camp we are making, our phone didn’t stop ringing, all of them wanted to get in the same time, but it wasn’t possible, the spaces were very limited, the parents were very disappointed, but we didn’t have a choice.

We put in a lot of thought on every detail. We built everything from scratch; all activities were about social skills. The morning, the afternoon, games, singing. Everything we planned, we had in mind how we can help these children, how can we bring out their talents, how can we make them feel they are important, how can we bring out their smile, how can we make them feel they belong somewhere, that someone loves them very very much.

The Success

Then came the big surprise, the results were simply unbelievable. We saw something we never dreamed, the difference we saw in the children was so surprising and rewarding. The children became much friendlier, they were speaking with confidence, they were opening up, they were showing real talents, they did not feel any more like the nothing from the class, we saw a lots of smiles starting to grow on their faces.

It was such a big success. The difference we made was so fundamental. Everyone around them was amazed, The parents were calling us, thanking us. Most parents reported back that their children came away after the day camp, with loads of new friends. Their level of self-value and confidence being higher than ever before.

The parents were so happy, they were asking us to do this more often. At least we should do social skills sessions through the whole year. It was a good idea, but we were very limited, it was very sad to say no to them, but we did not have the recourses, we did not have the people, it was only a trial. Therefore, the only happy thing we could tell them was that we hope to do it again on a much larger scale in summer 2018, to advertise in the local paper, send out flyers to schools for the kids to take home explaining our work and goals, what we aim to provide.  In our flyers, we will have a questioner asking the community to comment which activities and venues are best to help achieve our goals. In addition, asking the community to volunteer.

There are many children waiting for the summer group, so we hope with your help to be able accommodate around 80 children, for a 2-week fun filled day camp. Which will give them lots of tools and ideas how to form friendship, boost their confidence. From there we will see where the future takes us.

The Staff

We need to point out, one of the biggest reasons of our success, and one of the reasons we had so many calls, is our staff! First our director Mrs. D Sandel. she works during the year as a high school teacher, and social skills group facilitator, and a senco, she has a good outlook on all problems, how to solve them, she incorporate those lessons and values through exciting activities, she is also a practitioner of the Feuerstein method, and continuously teaches children how to think independently. and she is well known in the local community as an expert in helping children in need. Our head leader MRS E Taub a well-known teacher and head teacher for over 15 years. She has her own wall of certificates and accomplishments. And the same is with our other leaders and volunteers, so this is another reason we get a lot more calls than the places we have.

The How

We could not accomplish such success, only trough real hard work, through our projects, especially our sister project, and through our goals, all of this took long hours of planning and reasoning.

We create groups of mixed ages and abilities we give shy girls responsibilities and special honors, like preparing games and activities.

Every girl gets a partner who is of similar age and nature who can be their potential friend.

Everything is personalized we even have a welcome song that we sing every morning and a personalized badge.

Staff are trained to call girls continuously by their first name, shower them with lots of appropriate attention, and personalized compliments.

They all receive a star chart to encourage positive behavior and for every good deed or change, they will receive a token later we have a store where everyone can buy prizes and nosh, depending on how many tokens they have.

We encourage all our girls to take part in a range of stimulating activities, with goals of discovering their own nature, likes and dislikes, expressing their feelings and developing their talents.

The sister project

Every one of our girls will get a sister, a bigger sister or a younger sister, they will learn, the feeling of having a sister, the feeling of caring for someone, the feeling of love, the feeling of looking op to someone, one of our biggest successes.

we are never done!

0nly when the world is changed!

Our Hopes

Our hope is not to turn any girl away due to a lack of space or funding, with help from governmental funding or private, we hope to host this summer between 100 – 200 girls. we plan to do the same in winter. Then through the whole year. And to make a real difference in young people life’s. and this project will only be the beginning of prospered future.
